AI Governance

AI Bill of Rights Blueprint

A White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) document outlining five principles for the design, use, and deployment of automated systems in the United States: safe and effective systems, algorithmic discrimination protections, data privacy, notice and explanation, and human alternatives and fallback.

Why It Matters

While not legally binding, the AI Bill of Rights Blueprint signals U.S. policy direction and has influenced executive orders and agency guidance. It's the closest the U.S. has come to articulating a national vision for responsible AI.

Example

A U.S. federal agency developing an AI-powered fraud detection system uses the Blueprint's five principles as a design checklist — ensuring the system is tested for safety, audited for discrimination, minimizes data collection, provides explanations to flagged individuals, and offers a human appeals process.

Think of it like...

The AI Bill of Rights Blueprint is like a policy white paper that says 'here's what the house should look like' — it's not the building code yet, but it tells you where the regulations are heading.
